► Nomination Process

Nomination Process
Stage 1: Choose your Position

Could you be a full time Student Officer, or a Student Trustee? Do you want to shape the future of the Union through Student Council, or would you like to be one of the delegates Brookes Union sends to National Union of Students conferences?

Stage 2: Complete your Nomination Form

At the Students' Union Reception, in the Helena Kennedy Student Centre, you can pick up a Nomination Pack that includes a nomination form. Once this document has been completed you should place it in an envelope, together with your manifesto (see below) and return it to the Union.

Stage 3: Manifesto

The ‘manifesto’ is the key document in which you explain who you are and communicate your key messages to students. It is a public declaration of what you want to achieve if you are elected and needs to be carefully considered and produced with care and attention, as it will be used by students to judge whether they want to vote for you. We have provided a manifesto template, for you to use.

Stage 4: Hand it all in

Make sure you hand in the above items to Helena Kennedy Reception, by the deadline listed on the Timetable of Events.

We require paper copies of your manifesto and your completed nomination form, within the given deadline, for your nomination to be accepted. In addition, you will be asked to email a copy of your manifesto to the assistant election supervisor, Robin McSorley: rmcsorley@brookes.ac.uk

You will also need your photo to be taken by a member of the Communications Team. There are sessions listed in the Timetable of Events.

Step 5: Let your School Know

We have produced a letter from the Union that you may, if you wish, use to inform your school that you are a candidate in the elections. It may be useful to hand a copy to the Student Support Coordinator in your school.

Please note that this is not a “get out of jail free card” and is unlikely to mean you can miss deadlines; however it does notify your school of the extra work and commitment that you will be putting in over the campaigning weeks. It also raises awareness with the staff of the elections process and will hopefully generate even more interest.

Step 6: Attend a Candidates’ Briefing

For your nomination to be official you must attend the Candidates’ Briefing session listed on the Timetable of Events. If you cannot attend any of the sessions for any reason you must email rmcsorley@brookes.ac.uk. The Election Supervisor will make alternative arrangements for your briefing. Failure to attend a briefing will disqualify your nomination.

Step 7: The Campaign

Once all of the nomination process is complete, you need to make sure that you run an effective campaign, which convinces students to vote for you. Get a team together, design your posters and flyers and think about other ways to draw attention to your campaign. Voters need to remember your message and your name!
