How the voting works

Each ballot box will be staffed by two members of staff. As students come to vote, their current status as a student will be checked, and their student number will be taken. They will then be handed a ballot form, the number of which will be recorded.

Each student will be given the opportunity to vote for the candidates of their choice and place their votes into a sealed ballot box. These boxes will not be opened until the votes are about to be counted.

Every student can vote for the President and for each of the Vice Presidents and to decide who will represent them at the NUS conference (NUS delegates).

Some Union Council posts are all there to represent the views of otherwise under-represented groups of students, and only those students may vote for their own representatives. Only mature students may vote for the mature students’ officer. Only disabled students may vote for the disabled students officer etc.

Overnight the ballot boxes will be kept in a sealed room in the Students’ Union.

Before any votes are counted, a check will be made to ensure that each person who voted was eligible to vote and that they only voted once. Should anyone vote more than once, their voting papers will be discounted.

The Manifestoes of all candidates will be available at each polling station.

Students who identify themselves as a member of one of the groups with particular representation (e.g. mature, women etc) will have the right to vote in that election. They are not asked to prove their eligibility to vote in any section of the election.

The boxes will be opened and all votes counted on Friday 5th March, and the results will be announced that evening in Morals.
