| Overall purpose of post |
- To represent the interests of the membership within the University and the wider community.
- To provide political leadership for the Students’ Union.

| Main Duties |
- Be a Trustee of the Union and attend all meetings of Trustees.
- Be the primary spokesperson of the Union, representing the Union internally, locally and nationally;
- Be the Union liaison with the University Senior Management Team;
- Be the Student Governor and attend all meetings of the University’s Board of Governors.
- Attend all meetings of the Students’ Council.
- Have overall responsibility for the Union’s finances;
- Work with the General Manager of the Students’ Union to ensure the Union’s objectives are delivered;
- Promote student representation and participation in The Union and University;
- Promote student activities and development;
- Actively promote equal opportunities in the Union and work to eradicate all forms of harassment, discrimination, intimidation and oppression;
- Sit on University committees as agreed internally to ensure adequate student representation;
- Sit on Union committees and working groups as appropriate
- Chair Union committees and working groups as appropriate
- Liaise with members of the Union and University and ensure effective communication;
- Attend appropriate meetings and conferences and report back to Union Council and the membership.
- Be an ex-officio member of the Academic Board and NUS Conference;
- Present the previous financial year’s audited accounts to the Annual General Meeting and the University Board of Governors;
- Present the Union budget and plans for the next year to the Annual General Meeting;
- Act as Chair of Union Council and meetings of members of the Union in the absence of the Independent Chair;
- Be responsible for liaison with local residents;
- Work with, promote, and oversee the strategic development of all services of the Union and the Union as a whole
- Be responsible for overseeing elections as specified in the constitution and its schedules;
- Be responsible for any policy relating to the Union’s corporate social responsibilities, and develop and monitor practice to include ethical and environmental implications of purchasing;
- Be responsible for any policy relating to student welfare matters and campaign as appropriate

| In carrying out these duties, the post-holder must: |
- Make themselves aware of the Union’s constitution and current policies;
- Take all reasonable steps to ensure that the Union’s constitution and policies, together with all relevant legislation are upheld in all the Union’s activities;
- Comply with all elements of the Union’s financial regulations;
